Guy Contact Mix
Hailing from Western Australia, Guy Contact specialises in creating low-slung and sultry downtempo house rhythms. The subtle softness in his percussion is released by comforting yet pressurised acid grooves. His developing sound has been snapped up by Bitterfeld, R.A.N.D. Muzik, Butter Sessions, Coymix, Haws and most recently Craigie Knowes.
The music is plasmic yet pounding, often mind-bending and sometimes soothing. This nuanced coastal balearica was on full display in his COY003 release and the versatile EP’s euphoric mannerisms are emblematic of the producer he has become. After a lengthy hiatus, the train has well and truly started again and it’s full steam ahead, so we’re super excited to have him be a part of our Tapes Series as #33!

YES YES! So excited about this Tapes. Guy, can you tell us a bit about the mix, where did you put it together?
Thanks for having me! Yeah, this one has a bit of everything in it, generally, if it’s spacious, resonant, trippy, bleepy or groovy it’s getting a play by me haha. I have a habit of starting things out slow and gently ramping it up and this mix is no exception. I made the mix in my studio room at home in North Perth.
Fave track from the whole thing?
I’d say probably SYT - Beauty Unfold (Unfolded Dub), that track really isn’t over-reaching, it’s just sitting right in this nice groovy pocket. I also really like it when dub elements are re-contextualised in a 4x4 beat.
I remember the Coymix EP, I absolutely loved all the tracks. They’ve been staples in my set since. I’ve seen photos but what are you using to write these heaters?
Hahaha as silly as this sounds, 3 out 4 tracks were made on my iPad. During our first lockdown, it was really nice to just sit somewhere nice and tinker away on the iPad. It’s always changing though, track ideas might start on the hardware or in the computer and then I’ll always mix everything down in the computer.
How long have you been doing this sound? Have you been writing for long?
I’d say I’ve kinda found my sound within the last couple of years. There’s a whole bunch of music that has never been heard because it was only really made for my live sets. So personally I have felt my sound developing for a couple of years, but it has only translated into physical releases this year. I’ve been playing around with software and making music for about 10 years, but only properly making music I like for 4 years.
Listening to these previews of the Haws and Craigie Knowes release. So damn good!! Are you planning any travels to the UK? We’d love to have you play!
Yes! I would love that. Yeah, I’ve just joined a new agency Liquid Paradise and we are currently trying to organise a trip over to the UK & Europe for summer 2022. Fingers crossed everything goes well and I can make it over for some shows :)
Gotta ask about Perth. We’re very aware here of the Aussie scene producing so many artists, like, a lot. How’s it like there in Perth? Is there a big scene and if so where would you pick as a party spot?
Yeah the Perth music scene is thriving, to be honest I’m kinda surprised it isn’t more internationally renowned! The parties here are unique and really world-class. There’s maybe not as many music producers compared to somewhere like Melbourne but that side of things also seems to be ramping up recently. Maybe my fave party is Perfect Strangers at Picabar or some of the other day parties like Co-op that are on in the summer. The go-to venues are constantly changing, but people get really creative with where they are throwing the parties.
Quick Qs. Your perfect lineup? With you on too of course.
Oooh this is a hard one. I think I would have to include the following: Jane Fitz, Paramida, Gabriola, Fantastic Man.
And then I would book all of my Perth friends :)
Best track of 2021 so far?
Hmmm maybe it’s not technically this year, but the whole re-issue of Peyote Dreams - State of Mind (Slack Mix). That was really great, the Alex Kassian mix is fantastic, definitely up my alley :)
Also, I just heard Paramida’s Dream Ritual record and ‘French House 2000’ is surely a contender for track of the year for me. Big votes across the board for LOTR :)
You’re playing P bar, it’s 11am on a Sunday, lights up, the second wave of dancers are in, everyone has hit euphoria, hands in the air, you’re about to implode with joy if you get the next track right… what do you play?
Hahaha I love this question, it’s seriously so hard to choose! I like to think I’d keep it pretty deep and groovy but if we are talking full blown hands in the air euphoria, I think I would play “Jasper Street Company - A Feeling (After Midnight Mix)”. It’s probably not something I’d usually play, but I feel like at that hour, there needs to be some full euphoric vocal house. Maybe I’d throw in a big Chez Damier track for good measure.
Thanks so much for joining us dude and hope to meet soon!
