Manami Mixx

Bristol based, DJ, Producer and Pianist Manami has been killing it playing on huge lineups for years, holding monthly residencies on Worldwide FM and Noods, and releasing a string of solid releases over the last year that suggest there are more records sure to be in the pipeline.

Classically trained on both piano and violin and initially introduced to the world of dance music through classic 80s chicago house records: Manami’s instrumental training brings a deep rooted musicality to her mixes and production. Over the last 12 months Manami has released music across two different labels: ‘The 2000’s’ (released on CORRUPT DATA) channels pulsating baselines, punchy snares, 303 wobbles that are all layered on a foundation of 4/4 drum hits while Manami’s Alfresco Disco release ‘Plastic Italo’ took a deeper and darker turn with harder-hitting percussion and an infectious grove. Alongside her productions, Manami is constantly on great lineups alongside fellow powerhouse DJs such as Bicep and HAAI.

At the end of 2020 Manami gave Origins the best end-of-year soundtrack when she took over our Selects playlist and it's the percussive, eclectic and driving taste in her music and sets that makes us so excited to welcome her for Origins Tapes #27.

Hi Manami, How are you?

Hey I’ve been good thanks! Thanks for inviting me onto the Tapes series :)

How would you describe your Origins mix?

My mixes have been getting faster recently. It starts with new and old bumpy rolling tech house and garage, which slowly makes its way towards gritty sub-heavy steppers. Definitely a mix to bop to.

Now we are emerging out of lockdown and back into the clubs, has your approach to mixing changed or adapted if at all?

I’ve always liked smooth and clean mixing and that hasn’t changed but it’s gotten tighter I think. Have had a lot of time to practice via mixes and radio shows over lockdown. Ready to get into the clubs!

You’ve released some great music in the last 12 months, how does your musical background influence your productions and do you see the composition in a similar or different light?

Thanks! My productions generally are driven by harmony and melodies. More recently I’ve been working on combining the production and composition aspects in a more subtle way. For example, doing things with harmony to manipulate moods in a track, on top of the vibe inflicted from the sound design.

Do you have a dream label to release on and if so what?

Kalahari Oyster Cult and Nous’Klaer Audio would be very nice! Would love to get onto a Radiant Love compilation too. And maybe one day, an album on Ninja Tune…?

What has been your favourite set or radio show to listen to in 2021?

I’ve watched/listened to Djrum and LCY’s Fabric’s London Unlocked sets a silly amount. Unreal sets in an unreal setting. Colleen Cosmo Murphy’s Balearic breakfast gets me through the week. She exudes radiant energy. Skee Mask’s essential mix is also a bit of me.

You have two incredible shows on Worldwide FM and Noods, how important is radio to you, and for what reason?

Ah thank you! I’m so grateful to have those shows, they’ve honestly really helped me stay sane this last year. Even though similarly in a club setting I’m sharing music to loads of people, I love how radio feels like a much more personal and intimate sharing experience between host/DJ and listener. To be able to share the music that I love in such a way is really special.

What are you most excited about for the second half of 2021?

My debut EP release, hopefully gigs, and dancing in a club with my best mates.
