Sangre Voss Mix
For #65 on our Tapes series is the champion of maximalist left-field dance, Sangre Voss. He’s been pushing sounds out of South-East London since his debut Dance Class EP, released via Third Place in 2019 and now runs the eclectic pseudo pseudo as a platform for the more under-loved and peripheral genres.
Bad Internet Mix
Up next for Tapes #64 is Belgian native, Bad Internet. The La Bonne Musique co-honcho is a newcomer to the London scene, yet in a year's time has firmly settled in hosting some of the city's most exciting line-ups with his imprint and event collective.
Cleveland Mix
Brussels-based producer, DJ and artist Cleveland, is up next for #62 on our Tape Series. The sound universe of Cleveland, although versatile, is clearly recognisable. Cleveland's productions are subtle with a modern feel built around warm "Left-field" tones and organic rhythms while keeping a dancefloor focus through strangely elegant grooves.
Primrose Mix
Bringing in Tapes #61 is London-based musician Primrose, who creates spellbinding, colourful electronic music. He blends bouncy club focused rhythms and the other-worldly soundscapes of dreampop, film soundtracks, and shoegaze, culminating into a fresh and distinctive sound that he affectionately refers to as ‘Blade Runner Techno’.
As a DJ, Primrose is drawn to dramatic, emotional sounds and storming rhythmic transmissions from across the spectrum of electronic music and beyond, weaving between house, techno, 80s New Wave, post-punk & EBM.
Jonny From Space Mix
Here to take #60 on our Tapes series is Miami-based DJ & producer, Jonny From Space. He’s also a resident and key member of Club Space, III Points Festival and a close affiliate of Miami label OMNIDISC and Space Tapes. Along with friends Sister System and True Vine, the trio run a party series called Objects Don’t Dance. His style ranges from electro, techno, trip-hop, breaks, IDM, dembow, variations of bass music and jungle.
Syz Mix
Journeying from Brighton to Bristol and now residing in London, Syz (Oli Samways) has an impressive back catalogue of sounds and is here to take over Tapes #59. With releases on Method Lab and Pressure Dome, a sell-out EP on Control Freak Recordings, a single track release on Shanti Celeste and Gramrcy’s esteemed Peach Discs, and more. It’s no surprise that he’s an artist that has rightfully earned respect and support of many revered artists including Mary Anne Hobbs, Pearson Sound, Danielle, Zenker Brothers & Peverelist to name a few.
An Avrin Mix
Up next for #58 on our Tapes series is London-based ‘An Avrin’, an electronic music artist most known for releases on ‘Scuffed Recordings’ and ‘Slippery Sounds’. His eclectic releases are characterised by clean sampling, intricate detail and heavy bass, giving them a defining character despite the variations in genre and speed. ‘An Avrin’ also frequently releases music independently with playful bootlegs and EPs pushing the ever changing UK underground sound. More recently he has translated these productions into success behind the decks with shows in London, Leeds, Glasgow and even overseas in Kyiv, Ukraine. With a roster of finely tuned club tracks, no doubt ‘An Avrin’ is one to watch this year.
Paige Mix
London-based, Paige, is next up for #57 on our Tapes Series. Paige made her entrance into the music industry co-running and curating event and label, Night Service Records. Her approach to DJing draws influence from her dance-floor experiences and how music makes you feel, crossing club-focused genres frequently. Her style combines tribal, hard drum, and UK funky infused tracks with heavier techno sounds. Music to dance to.
Ell Murphy Mix
Stepping up for Tapes #56 is South East London DJ & vocalist Ell Murphy. Behind the decks, Ell combines both disciplines to deliver a unique performance style. You can catch her singing live over her high energy selections on the airwaves as a resident on Balamii radio and across the UK – with notable sets for FOLD, Hör Berlin, Fabric & Motion plus guest-mixes for Rinse, NTS & Reprezent. Ell’s studio output is just as exciting. 2021 saw the release of her debut solo EP on Shall Not Fade sub-label Time Is Now, featuring collaborations with DJ Crisps, Stones Taro & Highrise, receiving widespread acclaim & Radio 1 support. This year has also seen the growth of her collective Team Woibey, featuring rising selectors Mixtress, ohmydais & FAE and securing a monthly residency on Foundation FM & multiple festival bookings.
Mother Mix
Bringing in Tapes #55 is DJ & Producer Mother who has been spinning records with varying levels of importance for around two decades. He currently runs the Concrete Cabin label with 12th Isle's DJ Crud, and has turned in a fairly hefty amount of mixes over the past 5 years in particular: for operators such as L.I.E.S, Firecracker and Berceuse Heroique, made numerous guest appearances on NTS and Rinse FM, and dropped cassettes for the likes of The Trilogy Tapes, V I S and streetwear colossus Brain Dead. To pay his bills, he slings records and hardwear at Rubadub in Glasgow.
Ill Evans Mix
Up next on our Tapes Series for #54 is London-based DJ Ill Evans. Starting out as an intern at a well known techno label, he soon established a cult following for his party Kindred. After a number of sold out shows, lockdown kicked in, putting his nightlife ventures on ice. Unperturbed though he continued to develop the Kindred brand, opening a shop and radio station in London’s Farringdon area. Broadcasting every Tuesday throughout the day the radio station has hosted high profile names like Peach, Lyster, Mantra, DJ Tasha and DJ Skimask.
Mi-El Mix
Stepping up for Tapes #53 is London-based emerging DJ and talent mi-el. She has showcased her skills on a plethora of esteemed platforms such as Keep Hush, NTS and HÖR Berlin, catching the attention of labels and promoters both across the country and overseas. Notorious for taking bold risks that never fail to pay off, her unique genre-hopping, speed-bending style is sure to keep your brain ticking and your body moving.
Guava Mix
Guava, aka Bradley Hutchings joins us for #52 on our Tapes series. Guava is a British, Berlin-based producer whose discography includes releases on labels such as Holding Hands, Control Freak, and Rhythm Section.
His latest EP, released last month on Tread Records, represents a musical bridge between his electronic output as Guava, and his other work as a session guitarist and composer of film and TV scores. While most certainly a record for the dance floor, Guitarist EP is another example of Guava’s ability to push boundaries and combine elements of different music to great effect.
James Bangura Mix
Former military man and marching band member James Bangura is next up for #51 on our Tapes series. He’s an artist who has roamed the world and picked up musical influences at every stop on the way. Be it D&B in Alabama, blog house in California, or the rich house sound of New York, this Washington DC native is now distilling all those references into his own searing sounds. They have come on labels like Mister Saturday Night and can range from sauced out to brutally energetic. And the latter of those two is what defines his unrelenting mix for us. It is a hard-hitting collision of raw, decaying textures, pummeling drums, and stark, post-industrial atmospheres that are thrillingly harsh. The rhythms roam from the fringes of techno to the heart of jungle and on to icy but powerful minimalism that very much consumes your body. So strap in, cause this is one helluva ride.
Ronan Mix
Ronan, who joins us for the big #50 on our Tapes series, is the moniker of sound sculptor and disc spinner Robin Lohrey. A lifelong lover of rhythm and the capacity of sound to facilitate extended states of consciousness, he cut his teeth helping organise the legendary Groovy Groovy rave series in NYC from 2015-17. He has released music on his own label Eternal Ocean, as well as Planet Euphorique, and OnLoop. Enjoy!
Bakongo Mix
Here to takeover Tapes #49 is London based DJ & Producer Bakongo. When it comes to London sound it’s hard to overlook what ground Wayne Goodlitt has covered under his first alias Roska. He’s been at the forefront of UK underground music, merging genres and pushing UK Funky for just over a decade. Roska uses many styles and influences, including his Jamaican heritage as well as South African house. In 2019, Wayne decided to change his style and focus more on his second alias, Bakongo. Adding elements of broken techno, tribal house, and keeping the genre-blending elements we’re used to hearing. This led to his EP release on Livity Sound and he’s currently working on a live show where we will see more great things from Bakongo!
Jurango Mix
Up next on our Tapes series #47 is Jurango. The Bristol-based, DJ and producer has released on Livity Sound, Pressure Dome, [re]sources, and Intervention. Along with a residency at Bristol-based party PTS, and a regular monthly show on Noods Radio called Staring At The Wall. Enjoy this face-paced mix!
Talik Mix
Tapes #46 comes from Talik, a London-based producer and DJ quickly gaining prominence for her intricate, impassioned productions and equally expressive mixes. Treading the febrile ground between IDM, broken techno, and post-dubstep, her Tapes mix reflects a carefully considered approach to narrative construction and an astute ear for conjuring space through rhythm.
