Hey Jonny From Space! Thanks for being a part of our Tapes series. Let’s start with some introductions. Where are you currently residing?

Hey! Really appreciate you having me. I’m currently residing in Miami Beach, Florida in the south eastern part of the U.S.

When and where did you record this mix?

I recorded this mix in one take in my home studio on a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning.

How’s the electronic music landscape in Miami right now?

Right now it’s popping in terms of artists producing music and art in this city. We’ve lost a lot of venues and artists over the last few years due to insane increases in the cost of living here in Miami. I think a lot of us grew up not having a lot to lose so we have a really nice group of artists and DJs really putting their all into it because why the hell not. We also live where people vacation, as hard as that reality can be sometimes. Miami is cool because it’s an incredibly unique place with so many different styles, cultures, and music all meshed together and that reflects in the music being produced. It’s also so far from the rest of the country it’s almost its own thing. Danny Daze, Nick León, Coffintexts, INVT, Bitter Babe, Nicholas G. Padilla, Donzii, Sel.6, Goiz, and Roiju are just some of the people that are pushing the production boundaries here in the South. Aside from producers, we have an incredible array of DJs as well that are also putting Miami on the map. Sister System, Ashley Venom, DJ Ray, Ultrathem, Ms. Mada, Emma and Pressure Point are all putting in the work with their own style. I love that about us. Everyone works hard, they put their heart into it and carry themselves with respect.

Let’s talk a bit about your new party series ‘Objects Don’t Dance’. Who are you planning on getting down for the next one?

Objects Don’t Dance (ODD) is a party series my friends Sister System, True Vine and I started at Floyd, a smaller room inside Club Space in downtown Miami. We just did our first edition with Yu Su, who was stellar from start to finish. For our next one, we’ll be bringing CCL and Wata Igarashi together in May and I am beyond excited about that. I think right now they’re two of the best pushing the boundaries of their craft. Beyond that, we’ll be bringing in people like DJ Qu, Priori, Object Blue, Mozghan, Sepehr, Aurora Halal, Physical Therapy, Danny Daze, and Etapp Kyle. It’s going to be an odd year ahead.

So I heard that you’re working on starting up a new record label! What should we expect to hear from it?

My best friend Nick León and I are starting a new label called IMPACTO. (Spanish for Impact). You can expect a unique take on techno, breaks, and bass with a focus on Latin-style percussions and rhythms. Hopefully, we can expand on that even further down the line but right now we’d like to have a space for our friends first and foremost, wherever they may reside, it’s our way to bridge Miami to the rest of the world.

When it comes to your own productions, what software/hardware do you use?

I use Ableton to record and produce mostly in the box until I get the scratch to use one of my toys. In the box, I like to experiment with Portal and I love the Soundtoys pack to really elevate the sounds. Outside the box, I juggle between my Avalon Bass or my Modor NF-1.

What’s the first thing you do when starting a new track?

I space out and start working on the drums until I have a locked groove. From there everything else just flows like water.

Any exciting releases/collaborations coming soon?

I have a few projects coming soon that I’m very excited about. Danny Daze and I are putting out a 5 track collab EP on his label OMNIDISC. Shortly after I’ll put out my own 5 track EP by myself with a remix by Danny. Nick León and I also have a record coming out together on the Open Space label ran by our friends DJ Ray and Goiz. Coffintexts, Nick and I were in the studio the other night and we came up with some very fun ideas together that hopefully we can expand on soon. Aside from that, trying to figure out what to do with all the rest of the unreleased music I have.

Quickfire: Favourite VST?

‘Portal’ for the heads.

Favourite city to party in aside from Miami

NYC is always so fun to visit in the U.S but no one gets down like the people of Sãu Paulo Brazil. That place is special.

If your life had a theme song what would it be?

New Romantic by Andy Stott.

Thanks for being a part of the Tapes series!
