Toni Yotzi Mix

Toni Yotzi is up next for Tapes #72, a staple of both the festival and club circuit across Australia. Her sets traverse four decades of dance music with frenetic energy and zero compromise; from neon-hued techno and prog to tripped out bass and dubstep, trap, and up-to-the-minute club tracks from the boundless fount of domestic talent she’s ingratiated with across Australia.

Having played at some of Australia’s best festivals (Golden Plains, Inner Varnika, Strawberry Fields, Echo Flats, Pitch…), she also played an integral role in putting together Camp Doogs, Western Australia’s premier festival and brought the same curatorial nous to coordinating Dooj parties in Melbourne. She’s toured internationally, performed on Boiler Room and guested on NTS multiple times, as well The Lot Radio, Beats in Space and Noods.

Hey both - thanks for contributing to the Origins Tapes series! Can you start by introducing yourself?

hello ^_^ I'm Toni Yotzi (she/her) and I live in naarm / Melbourne. thank you for having me, feeling lovely to be in such amazing company for this mix series!

Tell us about this mix - where was it recorded and favourite track inside?

I have a few ~concept~ mixes in the works so I wanted this to be a look into what I'm loving in club traxx this winter. it’s got breakbeat, menacing percussion, bass, old rave, nu UK club funk from Eastfield swing, classic tech house like drumscape, some deepness and dubstep. recorded in my office (bedroom) on a lovely early spring Saturday afternoon. My heart is feeling deep steppahs mood at the end from jamo and versa & rowl. Also very obsessed with siu mata & amor satyr lately.

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

Ummmm the mix definitely has a bit of jump up nrg to it but i always think my core taste is kind of melancholy. My favourite context to play is an after hours space where there's no pressure to drop the mood down, no ones going to leave the dancefloor haha so i think this could be played in any setting hopefully.

As a promoter and radio host - tell us about living in Melbourne and your involvement in the scene there.

I've lived here for about 6 years and have enjoyed running parties like dooj and being involved with Triple R and Skylab, but tbh after a long time of radio and more full-time promoting when I lived in Perth it's been refreshing to allow more space to develop my own DJ style and sound. I have a lot of respect for people who can ~do it all~ but it can definitely come at a cost to my creative energy. I love having more time to be a supporter and dancer. I always make sure I tell ppl/dm/comment that I've seen crush it. Showing authentic love to the community around you and the younger crews coming up is so important. Melbourne is so rich for inspiration, keeps you working hard!

Having been involved in radio since 2011 - tell us about the importance of community radio and the role its played in your career.

Community radio is everything. It was Triple R's radiothon last week so I got to hang out on Millú's amazing Full Circle show and Dan Dare's How How The Moon. I grew up listening to Dan on RTRFM in Perth on Full Frequency, a show which I was so lucky to host for a few years too. Some of my favourite moments are times spent with friends and artists in the studio, it's an honest warm space that has created so many lasting friendships in my life.

Being known for playing obscure and genre-bending selections - what is your favourite way to discover music?

I joke that I love Beatport diggin’ :p going through like prog house from page one of the oldest releases or particular year periods that different genres were hitting right. Also listening to a lot of mixes, there will be a song that tickles me in some way. I have a little internet radio next to my bed so when I can't think of what to listen to noods or nts is on. I like record shopping when I go travelling, which I haven't had much of an opportunity to do so it's been more online adventures for a while. To try and keep track of particular sound design or artist tangents I go on I've started making a music mind map that I can look back at when I'm feeling like early 2000s german techno or Parisian bass etc. I find the information management of djing quite difficult so it's always a work in progress to have access to whatever I'm feeling emotionally with music.

Who are you listening to right now?

All Gillielove mixes, Anuraag, Wodda - do u wanna b, Sputnik One and Ambien Baby always and anything Special Request DJ related, Shy has the most insane sense of texture and fierceness.

Any exciting plans in the pipeline?

I’ve been working on this deep dubstep trappy mix for kia/animalia for years lol maybe I'll finish it soon. Whenever I set myself some sound palette brief in my mind the journey is so long. Also will hopefully finish some cheeky tracks with Micheal Ozone this year.

Thanks for being a part of the Tapes series!
