Marie Malarie Mix

Marie Malarie is joining us for Tapes #73. Best known for their carefully crafted sets, Marie is a resident of one of London’s finest queer nights HOMODROP & Happy Endings at the much-loved Dalston Superstore.

Marie curates their very own queer clubnights whose focus is to bring DJs, new talents, performers and artists together to celebrate the beauty of music. As well as their residencies, they are regularly seen spinning vinyl in the darkest, coolest corners of East London.

Tracklist

Thanks for getting involved in our Tapes Series! It's a pleasure to have you on. Why don't you start by introducing yourself?

Hi. I’m Marie. I’m queer and… still here! ;)

Tell us about this mix - where was it recorded and favourite track inside?

I recorded it last minute (classic) in my little blue room, on a grim and rainy blue Monday. To contrast the bleak weather, I made the mix as positive as I could. Fav track - probably the closing one!

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

Anything really, but definitely not when sat down. I like to recommend my mixes to anyone who is about to clean their flat. It gives you a kick (hopefully) to make things clean and shiny in a satisfying way. A kinda win-win symbiosis situation. Sorry, I guess I just love cleaning & music lol.

You’re doing bits at the moment! As a long-term resident for Homodrop, Happy Endings and ADONIS as well as promoting your own parties, tell us more about the projects you’re currently involved in.

I’ve been organising Happy Endings for a while but taking a step back. There are many people out there that deserve the opportunity to grow as promoters/DJs and producers and Dalston Superstore is a perfect platform for this. I run my own little event at the same venue called HYSTERIA - a queer night-life fantasy putting queer women, trans and non-binary folk at the forefront. If I had more power, I would LOVE to do sth outside mothership but I would find it difficult to do it on my own in London. I’m also planning to launch a new label - from queers, for queers & others. Keep your ears peeled!

What do you think of the current state of London’s queer clubbing scene? Is there anything you would change or like to see more of?

I must say that it changed a lot, for good, but ummm yeah, we definitely still need a bit of a change in London. There is not much of a choice when it comes to queer parties for FLINTA. It’s nice to see the appearance of some new mixed queer nights like HOWL, Riposte, UNFOLD etc. but except that, the scene feels very dominated by cis gay men and there is still lack of events/parties that I personally feel 100% ok with. BIG DYKE ENERGY is my fav one, it never disappoints music-wise, the crowd is always the best and the line-up is diverse each time. Femme Fraiche run by Michelle at Dalston Superstore is also a legendary lesbian club night but apart from these two there is not much of a choice! I guess it might be also dictated by lack of spaces in London atm, and is also fuelled by line-up direction, that again, is most of the time occupied by men. I think a suggestion for queer promoters would be to book less cis-male gay DJs, put some effort in researching new talents and make events more welcoming by addressing them to the right crowd. Dunno, it’s all quite difficult, I guess. I’m just a little poor complaining enby wanting a change that never comes. I guess other queers might be happy and satisfied cos there is def more events out there than before but for me - it’s never enough! ;)

I see you’re making the move into production, having recently remixed Courtesy’s ‘Night Journeys II’, tell us more about how that came about?

It came about quite naturally - she messaged me on Instagram saying that she likes my track from the latest SUPER DRAMA compilation and asked if I would be keen to remix one of her tracks from her latest EP. I’m a baby producer with some ongoing self-confidence issues, so didn’t really feel like I was able do it on my own. I love making music with my friend, soulmate and music mentor Orny who was keen to do it with me, so we sat down and gave birth to this weird baby in a very short time. Orny AKA Ornographic is one half of FAFF - an insanely talented queer DJ/producer duo. If you don’t know them - check them out right now!

Any other releases in the pipeline?

Oh yea, I’m working on my solo EP, on my own this time. Stay tuned!

Who are you listening to right now?

Black Girl Rock - The Theme (D-Ream Mix) on loop

Thanks for being a part of the Tapes series!
