Coco Bryce Mix

Stepping up for Tapes #44 is DJ, producer and label owner Coco Bryce. With well over two decades of experience, Coco Bryce can be regarded as a seasoned veteran in the world of uptempo dance music.  After getting his first pair of decks back in 1995 he soon found himself regularly spinning Gabber and UK Breakbeat records at Hardcore events near his homebase in the south of the Netherlands. By the late '90s Coco had taken to producing as well.

Ever prolific and never satisfied with sticking to any one formula, his discography contains over a hundred releases, spanning a wide variety of genres and labels, most notably Fresh 86, Lobster Theremin, Critical Music and of course his own imprints Myor, Myor Massiv, Diamond Life, Faces Of Bass and Ill Behaviour. A more recent development has seen him add yet another activity to his already busy schedule, hosting a monthly show on the radio station Balamii.

Thanks for getting involved in our Tapes Series! It's a pleasure to have you on. Why don't you start by introducing yourself? Where are you currently residing?

Thx for having me. My real name is Yoël, I currently produce and play under three monikers: Coco Bryce, DJ Y and Chavinski. I live in Breda, a small city in the south of the Netherlands, right on the Belgian border.

Tell us a bit about the mix. When was it recorded? Favourite track inside?

I recorded it a couple weeks ago, pretty much on the fly, as I usually don’t fancy planning things out too much. Favourite track would either be Midsummer Mist, one of my all time favourite jungle/breakbeat hardcore tunes…or So Soft by DJ Sofa, which I just signed to one of my labels.

Yourself, Tim Reaper and some others have really been re-shaping the jungle scene over the past years. Who inspires you musically and what kind of sounds float your boat at the moment?

Mostly non-jungle stuff tbf, both when it comes to what inspires me as well as the kind of stuff I listen to. As far as jungle and hardcore related influences go tho I’d say Manix and Dextrous.

I’ve mostly been listening to whatever is being played on Balamii and NTS lately, and then some old Madonna and Smiths tunes.

You’ve been releasing loads recently - Congrats! Any forthcoming release plans you can let us in on?

Yeah, I got a couple of bits coming up on my own labels, then an EP and a downtempo album on Fresh 86, another EP on Critical and a collab EP with Amy Dabbs on Lobster.

How did you first land into producing/DJing? Any tips for anyone starting out?

DJing I guess was mostly because I got into hardcore when I was around 15/16 years old through some of my classmates, a couple of whom had decks at home. They let me have a go at mixing records and I was instantly hooked. Then shortly after that, one of my uncles gave me a Roland TR505, I bought two of the first Korg Electribe synths and started producing.

What did the first track you ever made sound like? Did you delve straight into jungle to begin with?

I’m not sure what the first track I ever made was, but the first one that was actually released was an off-kilter electro kinda tune. It’s called Tirtzah, after my sister, and was released under my DJ Y moniker.

**Quick Fire** Dream lineup?

Realistically: Ell Murphy, Dwarde, Decibella and Warlock.. fantasy dream line up - Sade, the Smiths, Geneva Jacuzzi.. and then at the end of the night MF DOOM performing my favourite songs off the Madvillainy and King Geedorah albums.

Best music-related memory of 2021?

Just being able to do gigs again after a year and a half hiatus.

Tune you would play in a dark tunnel with one red light?

Ho.exe - Wavesick

Thanks so much for joining us!
