Reece Spooner Mix

Taking over Tapes #130 is East London based DJ and Origins resident, Reece Spooner, an electrifying force in the world of dance music and known for his irreverent and carefree approach to DJing. With an infectious energy that recharges and reignites dancefloors, Reece stands out for his diverse and heady musical palette. His sets span genres from jackin’ house, acid, and techno to ghetto, jersey club, electro, UK bass, breakbeat, footwork, and modern-day rave, with a strong penchant for anthems that keep the crowd moving.

Reece’s prowess is most evident in his monthly shows on Balamii, where he blends sonic storytelling with a playful, tongue-in-cheek attitude. His role in the dance music scene extends beyond DJing; as the founder of Fiasco!, London’s only black-owned queer rave.

Hey Reece, great to have you on the series and glad we could finally make this one happen! Can you start by introducing yourself for those who may not know?

Hey there! I’m Reece Spooner, your boyfriend’s favourite DJ, Producer, Vocalist, Partystarter, and resident bad bitch at Origins, all the way from North East London. Get to know!

Tell us about this mix - where was it recorded and favourite track inside?

I recorded this mix at home, in my little Studio flat in North London.

This mix is peak-time Reece Spooner behaviour — House, Techno and Club with that sexy energy, bounce, swing, and groove. I sprinkled in some tribal rhythms and naughty bangers just for fun. It’s like a musical buffet of my top influences: Chicago jackin’ house, Techno, Juke, Jersey Club, with a dash of UK Bass and proggy vibes, and a special nod to my Caribbean roots with some Martinique and Dennery segment soca vibes at the end.

It’s hard to pick a favourite track, but this mix features a brand new release from fellow Bath alum NIKS, which just dropped on Club Entries Vol. 2 from Amaliah’s label, Borne Fruits. I was on the first compilation, and this new compilation really takes it up a notch. It’s a super fun, sexy, tribal house track that I’ve been loving playing out these last few weeks. A first-class link-up from two of my besties!

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

Anywhere you need a serious energy boost — pre-drinks, the gym, or even your morning commute. It’s giving music triple shot oat milk iced latte.

Having been an Origins resident since the start when going to Bath Uni, what have been some of your favourite moments?

Meeting Job Jobse in Bath back in 2017 only to close FOLD after him last Halloween was a total full-circle moment. But honestly, joining Origins has been the best rollercoaster ride of my twenties. Eleven years of the best vibes!

Talk to us about your club night Fiasco!, having already done shows across all of London including take-overs at fabric - where do you see the future of the platform?

Fiasco! started at Dalston Superstore about five years ago and has since blossomed into a label where I drop my own productions. It’s a love letter to the black and queer creatives of the 90s, reimagined for the 21st-century London scene. Picture a mix of identities, ages, races, and musical tastes — all partying together without a hint of pretence to ghetto house, house, techno, UK Bass, Club + more.

Fiasco! is like my brain on a dance floor: a bit chaotic, cheeky, but full of joy and hedonism. After a nearly two-year hiatus, I'm back with more energy and creativity than ever. I’m kicking off a new residency at Corsica on May 31st with an amazing lineup including C.FRIM, Amaliah b2b Danielle, Jay Duncan, and yours truly.

I’ve learned so much in the past couple of years and have big plans for Fiasco!—from a content series to expanding the label with my tracks and those of friends and new talents. More parties outside London, and maybe even collaborating with some cool brands!

Lastly, any exciting plans coming up? Any standout gigs to mention and can we expect more releases anytime soon?

Right now, I’m laser-focused on releasing new music. Expect a fresh EP on Fiasco!—the first track, ‘Back It Up,’ is in this mix. I’ve got new music coming out on some external labels and vocal features on tracks from some amazing artists. I have some super fun shows lined up in London and across the UK this summer. Plus, stay tuned for more Fiasco! parties and some exciting UK and European shows in Q4!
