Monster Mix

Embracing the inner goddess of mischief, Monster is up next for Tapes #91.

With over a decade of experience under her belt she is now rightfully taking the place among Europe's best DJ. Showcasing her omnivorous taste for euphoric and fun music, Monster can be heard playing old school trance, techno, house, acid, breaks and everything in between, usually championing producers from her local Polish scene.

Thanks for getting involved in our Tapes Series! It's a pleasure to have you on. Why don't you start by introducing yourself?

I’m Monster from Poznań, Poland, resident of Projekt LAB club and a member of Oramics collective. Big fan of cheese and cheesy music.

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

Speeding in a fast car on a highway.

How would you describe your sound for those who don’t know?

Euphoric is the word I’ve heard the most often when it comes to my sets, however, I never stick to one genre, usually, it’s a mix of 90’s acid techno, old-school trance, electro and ravey breaks. And lots of vocal samples.

Talk to us about your collective Oramics and your involvement in the platform.

I’ve been a member of Oramics for almost 5 years now. It’s a feminist-queer collective representing women and the LGBTQIA+ community with a focus on Eastern Europe. I’ve been mostly responsible for running CDJ workshops for beginners and organizing parties at Projekt LAB club in Poznań. We’ve also released three charity compilations supporting different political causes.

What's the music scene like in Poland? How would you compare it to the rest of Europe?

It’s rapidly growing, many clubs have opened up in the last five years and the involvement of local communities has also gone up. It’s still centered around big cities with some notable examples like Poznań, Warsaw, Katowice and Gdańsk. It’s not as vibrant as Western Europe yet but there are a ton of amazing people putting a lot of work into making our scene exciting and unique.

Many don’t know that you’re the master-mind behind the ‘Bathroom DJ Greatest Hits’ page - how did that come about?

Over a year ago I posted an Instagram story with this Nick Carter-looking shirtless dude playing at HOR and dubbed it with Backstreet Boys and everyone lost it, my meme friend @bedroomdjfantasies reposted it and said it was a hit, so after a little bit of encouragement I decided to run a page like this and here I am one year and 100k followers later.

Where can we expect to see you next? Any upcoming gigs to shout about?

This weekend, 17-18th March I’m playing two shows at VTSS’s For Your Entertainment party in Poland. I’ll be playing my Belgium debut on 9 April in Brussels, a Stuttgart debut on 22 April and will be back in Amsterdam after a long time on 13 May for Fiber Festival. On 21 April I’ll be running my last Oramics club night at Projekt LAB in Poznań, which is sadly closing this summer after 10 years.
