Elias Mazian Mix
DJ, producer and singer Elias Mazian is a firm fixture of the club circuit in Amsterdam and beyond and he’s joining us for Tapes #126.
His DJ sets are never predictable, with house music forming a base to deviate from into all manner of unexpected sounds, be it jungle, techno or a classic pop song. The former Trouw and De School resident is refreshingly unafraid to share his sensitive side on the emotional journeys that form his DJ sets, productions and radio shows.

Hey Elias - pleasure to have you on the Tapes series! Can you introduce yourself in 3 words?
Disarming, enthusiastic and dreamy.
Tell us a bit about this mix - what’s your favourite track inside?
The first one is an unreleased track called ‘Time To Time’ by Amsterdam producer Kaap. It combines all the elements I adore in classic deep house while also maintaining a fresh edge. Every element complements each other effortlessly. Robbert (Kaap) is really one of Amsterdam’s best producers. While electronic music may not be the most complex genre, its true magic lies in the emotion it creates, and he excels in giving you that sensation. Hats off!
What’s the ideal setting to listen to it?
While doing something you don’t like. Like the dishes for example haha.
Having been a resident Trouw & then De School (which are unfortunately no longer) - you’ve been pretty integral to the Dutch music scene. Talk to us about your involvement in this spaces?
In the club Trouw, I started out as just a visitor, but after spending countless hours dancing there, I became a resident in the last year and a half. I was part of a group of youngsters like Interstellar Funk and Oceanic who were given the opportunity by programmer Olaf Boswijk to get slots I could never have dreamt of. When De School opened, I became a resident right away, and I've pretty much remained one ever since. It was at De School where I truly grew through self-acceptance. Of course, I'm always influenced by new trends and ideas, but it was there that I discovered I'm a house head, and that's how I can best express myself as a DJ. I had the privilege of doing the closing set alongside Job Jobse and Carista—it was magical, emotional, but above all, so much FUN! We were surrounded by the best crowd filled with old and new friends that just didn’t want to stop dancing until deep in the afternoon. I'm incredibly grateful to have been able to make my mark at two such institutions.
Your musical influences span across a wide range of styles, which is showcased on your Radio show ‘Private Hearts’ - tell us more about this?
It's actually quite simple: I love music. Whether it's tracks I want to mix and dance to, or songs that deeply resonate with me. In both ways, I can be moved, and Private Hearts serves as an outlet for the songs I listen to when I'm not in a dark club. I don't want to limit my musical spectrum to just dance music. There's so much more you can do with music than just dance to it.
This is also reflected in your productions where your recent album release sits more on the side of pop music - who are 3 non-electronic music related artists that have shaped your sound?
That's a tough question... But I think Dutch singer Eefje de Visser really convinced me that singing in Dutch and blending it with dreamy electronic music was a great idea.
What’s next in the pipeline for yourself?
A new EP with dance tracks, an EP with remixes from my album “Alleen Bij Mij’, playing some festivals with my band (Lente Kabinet & Down The Rabbit Hole for example) and DJ’ing all over the place!
