Next up in our Origins Tapes series is DJ & Producer Jeigo, who creates standout euphoric, melodic cuts for the club and takes the same care of their DJ selection as every sonic choice within their own music.

Jeigo’s standout musical movement of the last 12 months has to be their incredible 4 track EP on PETS Recordings ‘We Are Not Nothing’ that blends harmonic atmospheres with delicate yet hard-hitting drum sounds in perfect cadence. 

The future for Jeigo is incredibly bright and this mix is a wonderful example of their capabilities as a DJ and artist, and definitely an entity to watch for the foreseeable future.

Hi Jeigo! How are you?

Hey Origins crew, I am doing well, been a busy few months working on some projects, as well as my day job at Juno Records, but overall feeling good and optimistic about the future. 

I would love for you to describe your mix for Tapes…

The mix is a club functional curation of tracks I have been loving of late, new and old. I took the last lockdown as an opportunity to archive and rip my record collection, so I wanted to include some gems I had forgotten about or didn’t even realise I had (it was a good opportunity to fall back in love with my collection), as well as always, some new bits from my self and friends. 


You went to uni in Leeds where you were exposed to clubs such as Wire, Subdub and Cosmic Slop…how important do you think is the physical club space to the music’s development?

Yeah living in Leeds was one of the biggest reasons for me pursuing the music world, to be honest, spaces like Wire, Subdub and Cosmic Slop were fundamental in educating myself about the UK Dance scene. Having such a varied and diverse scene likes Leed’s has meant that I would be one weekend at a Roman Flugel all-nighter with 300 people at Wire and then the next night at a DMZ birthday at Sub Dub, so the physical space of clubs became an educating space for me and obviously it was also about just having a great time and building friendships with like-minded music crews (like Louf and Tom VR from Valby Rotary).

Does the club space influence your own productions in a different way to at-home listening?

Yeah 100%, after going to nights and then working on music the week after, I would be inspired to focus on really club-orientated tracks, more simplistic and minimal production in a way, especially when it came to mixdowns (the nightmare of my life). Then with the last year and all the home listening, I think I have more directed towards writing “Songs”, even though still with a dance floor in mind. It has become more about trying to get across the emotional waves of my life through producing but also keeping it linked with the reasons I love the music scenes’ physical spaces. 


Your sound is influenced by so many cities sounds and musical histories, is there a place in the world you are taking influence from at the moment?

I think over the last few years the UK’s diverse sounds have been the biggest influence. When I first started out making music, I was learning so much about how every city had a “sound” or genre. I studied the influence of the LGBTQ community on the creation of house music in Chicago during the ’70s for my dissertation and at the time I was heavily locked into the history and the “classic sounds”. Now though the influence is coming from the UK’s musical culture (past and present) and I think that is a big basis for what I listen to, which has obviously played into the music I am making at the moment.

Has your music changed at all in the last 12 months and if so how?

In ways it has, it has become more of a therapeutic technique at times, it’s still got that element of melancholy in it but as well is becoming less genre-specific. I got some new gear and software as well and my style is always going to develop, I don’t worry too much about it sounding like my other releases, as I think it’s key to allow it all to develop.

You have had a constant and continuous stream of musical output the last year including a standout EP on Pets Recordings and great tracks and remixes, are there plans for even more LPs/EPs in 2021?

Yeah, so the last year I’ve been working on a big project which should hopefully be announced in the next few months (a few tracks feature in the mix). Apart from that, I have a few tracks to be featured on V/A’s and just working on lots of new bits with no set plans in mind (which has been very nice). There is a concept for a label as well but not rushing that one for the moment :).


Can you describe to me your perfect night (with or without you on the lineup)?

To be honest, my dream night which I have thought about a bit over the last year would be my mates and I (Tom VR, Louf, and our mate Harry) all night at Wire. We used to have mixes together before nights in Leeds and it was always just fun and a bit ridiculous. It would be great to replicate that in a space like Wire, which holds a place in all our hearts.


What are you feeling optimistic about in 2021?

Dancing, mental well-being, and getting better at mixdowns!
