J Wax Mix
Stepping up for Tapes #48 is Edinburgh-based J Wax. He only started releasing music in 2019 but the young DJ & producer has already had two highly respectable releases, with a third out very soon.
With his sets encompassing everything from electro, breaks, jungle, garage and more, J Wax is an artist gaining a serious amount of pace. He also co-runs Edinburgh-based collective Palidrone, which has hosted acts such as SPFDJ, Sync24, Giant Swan, DMX Krew and DJ Stingray.

Hey Jace! Welcome to the Tapes Series! Glad to have you on board. Quick intro and a few weird J Wax facts?
Thanks for having me! Hello, I'm Jace Bryan, originally from Tayport, I'm an Edinburgh-based Producer and DJ known as J Wax. Some weird facts: over lockdown I put in over 350 hours into Age of Empires 2. I really like anchovies and I have a dog called Jessy.
How’s life up in Edinburgh at the moment? I’ve seen Parris is coming up for your party next weekend at The Mash House next week - that’s gonna be a good one!
It's amazing, I love it up here. The city is so beautiful and you're never too far away from some unreal views. I stay in Leith which is full of great food, cafes, and pubs, there's always something going on! I'm so excited for Parris to play at our night, it’s our 4th birthday, which I quite can’t believe, so we’re really excited to celebrate!
What’s the nightlife scene like generally up in the Scottish capital at the moment?
It's buzzing. The Cowgate is such a great place for music. Sneaky Petes, The Mash House, and Bongo are incredible and some of the best clubs on the planet that everyone should try and visit! We've got a great community between all the promoters and DJ, it's a really friendly atmosphere, everyone wants to help each other out.
Congrats on your latest release on Kouncil Cuts in 2021. Really nice collection of sludgy electro tracks! What have you got in the works at the moment?
Thanks! So I’ve got an EP due out in a few months on a really exciting label which I can’t wait to announce. Plus, I’ve also finished off another EP which I hope to release later on in the year. Also, we’re working on the first Palidrone EP.
What are your top 3 Scottish labels at the moment?
Craigie Knowes, Kouncil Cuts and Lunacy.
Tell us about your label, Hilltown Disco. I’ve heard the premiere track on the latest compilation ‘Raziel’ and can’t wait to hear the rest when it comes out on the 25th of this month!
So I’ve been involved with the HD guys for a number of years now, without them I doubt I’d be at the stage I’m at. They’re really bringing a lot of noise to Dundee which is great to see! I’m so chuffed to be a part of the collective. Keep an eye out for some sick releases.
What was it like playing in Kyiv toward the end of last year?
An absolutely surreal experience. The city was beautiful and the people I met were so kind and friendly. There was a real sense of community and love for the music and culture. The crowd was fantastic as well. Kyiv was such a dope venue and everyone involved was super cool, can't wait to go back at some point!
