Up next for Tapes #104 is Amelia Holt, best known for her shapeshifting sets and weaving through genres and tempos to create a narrative flow uniquely her own. She currently holds down a residency at Public Records and at The Lot Radio – and runs an eponymous monthly music newsletter, In Your Dirty Ears, highlighting her favourite new electronic releases and more, with Yumi and S. Casella.

Incubating since 2020, Uwu dust bath is her newly launched label co-birthed with Athen’s based DJ, Noff. The label acts as a virtual hub, connecting and documenting leftfield artists who share mutual affiliation for sonic release and elevated states.

Hey Ameila - thanks for contributing to the Origins Tapes series! Can you start by introducing yourself?

Hello, my name is Amelia Holt and I am based in NY :) I am enjoying the sweaty summer πŸ”₯πŸ§–β€β™€οΈ.

Tell us about this mix - where was it recorded and favorite track inside?

This mix was actually a little practice session, I was planning on listening to it at the gym and reviewing it. It came out great I think, it 's hypnotic in the beginning then faster towards the middle and end. The mix was recorded in my living room with two cdjs and a little rotary mixer. Favorite track is Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus! ;)

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

The gym or office space.

Being Mexican born but currently based in NYC, tell us more about the Brooklyn club scene - how do you think its shaped your sound?

The club scene is great, there is lots happening all the time. I also feel everyone has been more supportive of each other after the pandemic, so  things are changing here. There are lots of great diy parties and more clubs popping here and there.

I think the sound of New York feels very fluid and not tied to one genre.

You also run a monthly newsletter, In Your Dirty Ears, highlighting new electronic music releases - what is your favourite way to discover music?

Sharing music with friends is the best way, but also digging deeper into Discogs and the discographies of artists. Every time I go to a new city, I love exploring the record stores and the sound traditions of the city. Shout out to La Rama records, one of my favorites ;)

You run the platform with frequent b2b partner Yumi & S. Casellea - how did it come about and talk to us about the importance of spotlighting up and coming artists?

The concept started during the pandemic and when we were all sharing music in our WhatsApp group. We decided it might be a great idea to share our selections with more people, plus support artist during this time. We continued the letter for a couple more years and right now taking a little hiatus but hopefully we can be back at it sometime.

Who are you listening to right now?

I am currently listening to Tricky - Valentine.

& An-i's new EP on Cititrax, Rabble. He just performed a live set in NYC to celebrate Minimal Wave 18th Anniversary and it blew my mind.
